Lemon

Lemon used to be a designer and is a collector now. In particular, Lemon has a deep affection for the retro gadgets of the 1970s and 1980s. Lemon has opened a studio called Lemon Seoul to share and communicate with the public similar tastes, not only sound devices such as turntables, boom boxes, cassette tapes, and recorders, but also electronic products, figurines, and robots that can be seen in museums.

Gawha‘meme’sasung

There is a saying that “when one’s home is happy, all goes well.” The wishes for harmony, good health, and blessings of the family have continued throughout generations, only in different forms. Memes, which are carefully created by the elderly with wishes for each other’s wellbeing, has expanded from their own age group, permeating the younger generation. The nature of the messages in the images seemingly from the past, diverse colors, and free-looking characters resembles the image of our family on holidays.

The designer planned the space by separating and rearranging each element of the memes with wishes, so the low-resolution messages seen through the mobile screen have been expressed in 3D. The space gives us another sense of something new. This enables the viewers to enjoy the meme culture, which was regarded as so-called senior citizen culture in the past.

3. ♥︎4U

In a group cell phone chat window where a family is gathered, they share messages wishing for the well-being of their family members. Those image files are intriguing. The text gathering all the positive words in the world and old-fashioned images are combined in the memes, which contain sincerity praying for the happiness of their family. People have long wished for the well-being of their family. In ‘♥4U’, font designers and photographers send warm replies to the messages they have received using text and images, the two key elements of the greetings wishing for the receiver’s well-being. When considering the real time and spatial environment in which not only Internet memes but also greetings are shared, we can come up with the front of the memorial service table on the morning of a Korean holiday. At this exhibition, through the friendly-looking, old TV sets installed in front of the folding screen and the messages contained in them, we hope viewers will get an opportunity to look at common memes shared between family members from a new perspective.
