Flowers and Heart

Decorating and emphasizing text with image elements has been conducted for a very long time. The origin of the manicule (☞), which appeared earlier than the 15th century, shows that the grotesque fingertip, which is carefully drawn at the corner of a book page, greedily points to the part that the reader has noticed in the article. Hearts, a symbol that are easily used today, were originally a simple image of the human heart. When considering the human desire from long ago to decorate and emphasize the text, the message of wishes in senior citizen memes is read like a magic spell, while combining images of natural objects such as light, rainbows, flowers, and metals that move mechanically in the background.

The elements used to emphasize the messages are too flashy. They neither have any unified style nor follow the rules of modern typography. However, that is why the free energy emanating from the mixed decorative images and text in memes is attractive. The designer is trying to show such an image in a more sophisticated form using decorative characters that existed in various eras before the development of current technology and the analog cut-out animation method. This work honors the numerous attempts that people have made to emphasize the messages that they considered important, and also emphasizes the fantastic and surreal feeling it brings about from senior citizen memes. The text was created only from messages dotted with the affection and concern of the sender, which matches well with this topic.

3. ♥︎4U

In a group cell phone chat window where a family is gathered, they share messages wishing for the well-being of their family members. Those image files are intriguing. The text gathering all the positive words in the world and old-fashioned images are combined in the memes, which contain sincerity praying for the happiness of their family. People have long wished for the well-being of their family. In ‘♥4U’, font designers and photographers send warm replies to the messages they have received using text and images, the two key elements of the greetings wishing for the receiver’s well-being. When considering the real time and spatial environment in which not only Internet memes but also greetings are shared, we can come up with the front of the memorial service table on the morning of a Korean holiday. At this exhibition, through the friendly-looking, old TV sets installed in front of the folding screen and the messages contained in them, we hope viewers will get an opportunity to look at common memes shared between family members from a new perspective.
