Fire Flower of East Asia

Typojanchi 2011: International Typography Biennale begins from where we are standing at the present. Korea’s neighbors, China and Japan, both are key countries in East Asia, deeply rooted in the sinitic language tradition. These three countries, strong in cultural and traditional pride, have attracted the world’s attention with their remarkable economic development. Therefore, there is little doubt they are becoming a central focus of global culture.

The first glimpse at a nation’s culture can be found in its system of writing. By showing the visual form of letters and characters, typography is a keyword encompassing linguistic as well as visual arts. In this regard, Typojanchi 2011: International Typography Biennale seeks to function as a mirror that reflects the typography of these three East Asian countries. Visitors will be able to identify the similarities and differences – the here and hereafter of three writing traditions that seem so close yet so far apart.
