Mariana Castillo Deball
Born in 1975, Mexico

Mariana Castillo Deball’s work often involves what she calls a “kaleidoscopic approach to language,” by which she suggests taking methodologies from other disciplines, such as archaeology and anthropology as well as other creative fields, and exploring how the different ways of describing the world can create a multi-faceted perspective. Never Odd or Even is a project she initiated in 2005, by inviting individuals of varying backgrounds to create “a book of unwritten books”: a publication consisting of twenty-three dust jackets of non-existent books. The subjects included archaeology, contemporary gardening, magic, history of technology, mysticism, tourist guides, autobiography, archival techniques, and monuments in motion.

For the second volume published in 2011 on the occasion of an exhibition of the same title at Grimmuseum, Berlin and Museum of Contemporary Art, Roskilde, she expanded Never Odd or Even to thirty imaginary dust jackets conceived and designed by artists, curators, writers and designers she invited for the project, touching subjects as various as unpublished memories, tropical manifestations, intra-genealogy, the reason why the letter “e” is everywhere, the taste of truth, the aroma of existence, contemporary ruins, conversations between a cardinal and a roadrunner bird—a kaleidoscopic literary and visual feat, indeed.

Mariana Castillo Deball lives and works in Berlin. Recent solo exhibitions include Chisenhale Gallery, London, and CCA, Glasgow (2013); Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach (2010); and Kunsthalle St. Gallen (2009). Her work has also been shown at dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel (2012); ILLUMInations, the 54th Venice Biennale (2011); Migros Museum, Zurich (2010); Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit (2010); Athens Biennale (2009); and Manifesta 7 (2008), among others. Deball was awarded the Zurich Art Prize in 2012 and is nominated for the Berlin Preis der Nationalgalerie für junge Kunst 2013.
